Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

This September, I had the amazing opportunity to travel to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil with my company. Here are a few pics from the trip!

First thing we did upon arrival was walk down to this farmer's market [while we were waiting for our hotel rooms to be ready!]

Took this picture for Andy, lest he ever wonder why he persists in making sure his server closets stay so tidy

The soccer culture there is in no way exaggerated. There was a soccer game - usually multiple - always going on on the beach.

The first night we dined at a fabulous Italian restaurant. Or, Brazilians' take on Italian. Yummy!

The next night we dined on more authentic Brazilian fare. This was my first-ever caipirinha (pronounced "kappa-REEN-yah"). Very like a mojito with no mint. Very delicious.

Chris, my boss's boss, arrived the day after we did, and he had the misfortune of ordering the only thing on the menu he had to cook himself! Ha!

We stayed in what was said to be the best hotel in Rio. Not without its quirks, there was no switch for the minibar light. The maintenance man had to come pop the fixture off and unscrew the lightbulb. We Americans are so high maintenance!

Very blurry, but you can sort of imagine the what the train looked like. Pretty adorable.

Leave it to me to take a momentous occasion in my life and turn it just so slightly blasphemous (HIGH FIVE!)

It's sort of something else to look up while you're driving around Rio and see this statue perched atop a mountain. I've seen so many swirling helicopter shots in movie dramas from overhead. It looks so, well, down to earth from this angle.

Our team (and about 400 other people) went to a churrascuria (Brazilian BBQ) for a gala dinner - this is about third of our group!

We started the week with an international industry conference and ended the week with just the folks from our company - global R&D centers represented. We've become a pretty close-knit group. I got up to give a presentation and told them to smile pretty. ;)

MONKEYS!!! And all the Brazilians were like "Why are you taking a picture of our squirrels!?" ;) This is a marmoset, or so I was told.

The Christ the Redeemer statue faces the Sugar Loaf mountain. If you see the sharper mountain peak halfway between my head and the left edge of this picture, Christ is on top of that mountain. Just take my word for it.

And this was the Barra de Tijuca beach by our hotel. It was about 65-70 degrees that day, but we had to stick our feet in.

Now for a random assortment of funny Brazilian observations. Number one: quail eggs. Like chicken eggs but about the size of black olives.
